Do you lack smart goals?

I was on a self service cafe this weekend with  a friend. As we stood at the counter waiting to order our food a man came up to us holding a bowl of soup.

“I’ve been waiting 10 minutes for a spoon to eat my soup and my soup is getting cold.” he said.

My friend caught the attention of a member of staff and asked for some spoons. A few seconds later the staff member handed over the spoons. She gave one to the man.

“Thank you, but my soup is getting cold,” he complained.

“Why don’t you ask them to replace your cool soup with hot soup?” she asked.

“But my soup’s getting cold,” said the man as he walked away.

The man focussed on lack:

  • Lack of a spoon
  • Lack of warmth in his soup

My friend focussed on the solution:

  • Obtain a spoon
  • Replace the cold soup with a fresh bowl of of soup

Do you focus on lack or solutions?

Do you focus on what you don’t have? Do you say:

  • I have not got a relationship
  • I have no money
  • I have not got a good job

In response to this lack you may create goals that take you towards dealing with this lack. You address lack of a relationship with the goal to find a partner or you create a goal to find a new and better job.

No matter how good your goals are, if your mind is focussed on lack, then your goals will be difficult to achieve.

The smart goals way is by starting with gratitude and then create smart goals to achieve more success in your life. For example you could re-frame the above statements as:

  • I am happy being single. I’d love to share my happiness with a partner
  • I am happy that I have money to feed, house and clothe myself. I’d love to attract more money so that I can treat my family to a super holiday
  • My job is fine. I will get a better job soon so that my talents are used more fully.

Smart goals start by appreciating just what you do have.  Your life is already abundant. Smart goals make life more abundant.

Smart goals shift you attention from lack to abundance, from problems to solutions. When you do this you will find that your life seems to flow in harmony with natural laws.
